Florida State 35, Sul Ross State 13

FLORIDA STATE 35, SUL ROSS STATE 13

TALLAHASSEE, FL, October 20, 1951 - On a rain soaked field before a sparse crowd of 1,960 damp fans, Florida State rolled with a smooth ground game tonight to defeat Sul Ross 35 to 13.

The Seminoles had too much power and manpower for the Alpine Texas Lobos. The Sul Ross' vaunted passing attack of Quarterback Charles Lafoon was pretty much grounded by a soggy ball.

It looked like a ball game in the first quarter as the Lobos piled up a 13 to 7 lead. But the sleek running of FSU's Mike Sellers and Nelson Italiano and other nifty backs, and the Seminoles' ability to cash in on the breaks saw them score three times in the second quarter and again in the third. The FSU defensive line reared up and pretty much had the Sul Ross attack in harness for the last three quarters. The Indians hit pay dirt first on four plays from scrimmage after taking the opening kickoff. Plays on the drive included Italiano's return of the kickoff 15 yards to the FSU 30 and Bringger's 27 yard gallop to the Sul Ross 39. Sellers dashed the final 39 yards around right end to score.

Sul Ross bounced back to score twice as they broke loose some shifty backs. Lefthalf Jim Mobley scampered to six points on a 23 yard dash, and Back Duane Parsons trekked 48 yards to score after intercepting an Italiano pass.

A 47 yard run by Italiano put the Seminoles back in the game in the second quarter, as he stepped around right end to go all the way. Sellers grabbed a blocked Lobo punt on the Sul Ross 12 and scored. Jimmy Lee Taylor, FSU defensive end, broke through to block the kick.An interception of a Lobo pass by FSU Halfback Curt Campbell brought the next score. He grabbed a toss of the Lobos' Lafoon at the Sul Ross 29 and went the rest of the way untouched.

A sustained third period drive brought the Seminoles' last score. Sellers was the mainstay of the march that went 89 yards. He scored from the six.

Ernie Huggett, FSU placekicking specialist, made good on five straight points. Shahan kicked one out of two points after touchdown for Sul Ross.

Singled out as FSU's line stalwarts tonight were Captain Bill Dawkins, guard and linebacker, Vic Szczepanik, guard, Tackle Bob Wodrich, Defensive End Jimmy Lee Taylor and Defensive Back Curt Campbell. Tommy Brown's punts, for an average of 42.7 yards, kept the Seminoles out of trouble when the offense failed to make headway.

The victory was FSU's second straight. Coach Don Veller's squad, about all of which he played tonight, has lost only to Miami this year and holds three wins.
FSU used 57 men, Sul Ross 26 that composed the entire squad.
